- MARTIN, Abner B. - Suddenly, on Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, Abner B. Martin, in his 90th year, of RR 1, West Montrose. Beloved husband of Mildred Martin. Dear father of Elaine and Fred Richinger of Kaslo, B.C., Keith and Marg of RR 1, West Montrose, Carolyn Todd of Kent, Washington, Dennis and Helen of RR 1, West Montrose, Quentin and Jean of RR 2, West Montrose. Also lovingly remembered by his 14 grandchildren, Monica, Lisa and David, Craig, Rachel, Jason and Angela, April, Kyle and Katrina, Alannah, Mariah, Tarrah Joy and Rosaleigh and his five great-grandchildren, Benton, Spencer, Jordon, Kelsey and Madeline. Abner will be sorely missed by his longterm work associate, Alfons Dahlke. Predeceased by his parents, Henry B. and Lovina (Bauman) Martin and two sisters, Mary Ann Martin and Adeline Weber. Abner was born and raised in Waterloo County. He began a Holstein herd on a farm near Winterbourne. In 1945, in his work with livestock, he showed a willingness to adopt effective production management tools such as artificial insemination and later, embryo transfer. Mr. Martin was awarded a Master Breeder's Shield from the Holstein Association of Canada, an organization in which he served on the Board for 15 years and as President from 1971-1972.In 1962, Abner was a partner in the purchase of the Kitchener Stockyards and eventually became its Manager. He served as President of the Ontario Livestock Auction Association and helped found the Livestock Market Association of Canada. He worked with county agricultural representatives and the Ontario Department of Economics to encourage farmers to keep better accounting records and this led to the formation of the Waterloo County Farm Business Management Association of which Abner became the First President.Abner Martin served as Co-Chairman of the International Ploughing Match in 1954 and was named Farmer of the Year in 1960. He served as a member of Woolwich Council for five years and was Reeve for two years. In retirement, Abner bred and raced standard bred horses and became involved in the Woolwich Agricultural Society and Raceway Management. Abner was recognized for his leadership by his inductions into Waterloo County and Ontario Agricultural Halls of Fame.The family will receive friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, on Thursday, 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. At 9 a.m. on Saturday, transfer will be made to Calvary United Church, St. Jacobs for funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Brian Robinson officiating, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.In his memory, donations to Calvary United Church Building Fund, where he was a longtime, active member or Canadian Food Grains Bank would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.
